MISSION STATEMENT

St. John’s Academy is a classical, Christian, college-preparatory school dedicated to training virtuous scholars.

As a Christian school, St. John’s Academy exists for the purpose of training and equipping the next generation to glorify God.  We teach students to think in accordance with, and to defend, the truth.  We teach a comprehensive Christian worldview as the undeniable, inseparable, and immutable foundation of each subject.  Our goal, as a classical Christian school, is to challenge students to be life-long lovers of learning without apology or contradiction to the truth of scripture.

We believe that all human life is sacred and created by God in His image (Genesis.1:27). We are, therefore, called to defend, protect, and value all human life (Psalm 139).

We believe that God wonderfully and immutably creates each person as male and female. These two distinct, complementary sexes together reflect the image and nature of God (Genesis 1:26-27).

We believe the term “marriage” has only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture (Genesis 2:18-25). We believe that marriage between one man and one woman, uniquely reflects Christ’s relationship with His Church (Ephesians 5:21-23).

The Rhetoric Form is the final stage of classical education.

Senior Thesis:
Rhetoric is using the Art of Persuasion to create, write, deliver, and defend a thesis.

  • In their Senior year, each student will write a thesis that is about 5,000 words in length on a single topic of their choosing. We will use the Five Canons of Rhetoric and the Five Common Topics of Invention as a guide.
  • In the first quarter, we will focus on narrowing the topic to a single, clear, concise thesis statement utilizing the First Canon of Rhetoric (Invention) along with the Five Common Topics of Invention.
  • In the second quarter, we will utilize the Second Canon of Rhetoric (Arrangement) to outline and organize their arguments.
  • In the third quarter, students will put flesh to their outline skeletons as they begin writing grammatically correct, stylistically mature sentences. We will utilize the Third Canon of Rhetoric (Style) here. All major writing will be completed by the end of the third quarter.
  • In the fourth quarter, students will begin memorizing their papers (the Fourth Canon) and preparing to defend their thesis through in-class interactions. Finally, they will deliver their thesis (the Fifth Canon) and defend them before a panel.
